Paul began learning the craft of penmanship from his father, a trained calligrapher. Since then lettering and letterforms have played an important role in his life. Since becoming a member of QuayCrafts, Paul has devoted more time to calligraphy exploring ways of using lettering within his paintings, either as words projecting their own meaning or as graphic devices. In Islamic, Chinese and Japanese traditions calligraphy has been used extensively, often developing letterforms, which are in themselves, art works. The shapes are often so evolved that the meaning can no longer be clearly read and often, in Islamic writing, one letter can convey a whole text. With these in mind Paul has spent time developing this in a Western context leading to what is now often called Abstract Calligraphy. Paul does not restrict his work to paper.
