The pieces on display here are made from wool felt, which is a medium I have been using for several years now to create work in two and three dimensions. Felt is an ancient form of constructed textile, still used traditionally in parts of the world where sheep are kept, for covering dwellings and for clothing.
I have developed my own techniques in order to realise my ideas by layering hand-dyed and naturally-coloured fibres in particular ways to exploit the characteristics and properties of the fibres to bond with each other and to shrink. I make work that is both abstract and figurative, functional and non-functional, depending on the theme and the way that ideas develop and find their visual form through the physical process of making. As a member of Quay Crafts Group, I enjoy the challenge of responding to a thematic approach.
