Ali Hughes has always ‘made things’, which eventually lead to a degree in making things (BA Crafts with commendation). Her main interest is in textiles, but this covers a broad spectrum and she continually explores the endless possibilities presented through stitch and knit, paper and paint, text (words are a recurring theme) and print.
When not being distracted by too many options, Ali currently makes bags of a simple and sturdy design under the name of ‘Dr Bean’s Bags’. Inspired by the yachting location of Cowes, the bags are each given an identification number and come complete with a shackle, which in a sailing community is very handy.
Bag making has become a full time occupation and although this is seen as ‘Production’, Ali wishes to explore the creative possibilities of this venture whilst providing visitors to the Isle of Wight with the opportunity to purchase a unique island-made item.
